Week 5

Hello👋 everyone! Welcome back to our week 5 blog. For today’s activity we will doing Material for Design.

Now what is Material and Design?💭
  1. It is a conventional and traditional method
  2. Finding a material with properties similar to a product
  3. With no manufacturing difficulties and not costly💰
The whole process is to find a better way to improve an old product.👍

Design for Materials – Worksheet for Activity

Class:

DCHE/FT/2A/02

Group:

5

Name of material

Nylon

Chemical Name

Polyamide plastic

General Description

Nylon is a thermoplastic silky material, first used commercially in a nylon-bristled toothbrush in 1938 followed more famously by women’s stockings in 1940. It is composed of polyamides of high molecular weight and usually, but not always, manufactured as a fibre.

General Properties

-highly elastic to viscoelastic grades in a range of densities and hardness

-lightweight

-very strong

-not expensive

-quick drying abilities

-lustrous

Opportunities

Its elasticity, versatility, strength and resistance to mildew and availability enables it to be widely used in parachute canopies and projects that require flexible plastics with the ability to be very lustrous, semi-lustrous or dull.

Discuss among the group how this material can be used as a direct replacement to a material in an existing product without any significant changes in the design

Nylon is able to replace cotton in clothing without any significant changes to the design.

Properties:

- Because of its high elasticity and quick drying abilities, you are able to wear the material with comfort.

-It is lightweight and strong material which allows the clothing to be of better quality and could last longer before it wears and tears.

Appearance:

-Nylon has a lustrous finish as it can also act as a synthesis replacement of silk which gives it a luxurious appearance without it being overpriced.

- Nylon can also be easily dyed to suit the taste of the trending market to attract customers to purchase the clothing.

Cost:

-Thin Nylon is inexpensive and could be purchased for mass production of the clothing.

-Excess Nylon used from producing the clothing product can be recycled into making more clothes or other products to reduce cost.

Discuss among the group how this material can be used to enhance the functionality of an existing product through some changes in the design.

Nylon can be used to increase the wear-resistance of the tyres by adding nylon as reinforcing material.

Properties:

 - Because nylon has a high tensile strength making it more wear-resistant.

 - Nylon is impact resistant making it more suitable for heavier vehicles like buses and trucks.

Comments

  1. Team, the Week 5 lesson was on Design for Materials. Put simply, it is about altering the designs of a product to suit the application of certain materials.
