Literature search on Corrugated Fibreboard :
To make a standard sheet of cardboard, a sheet of corrugated paper is placed between the inner and outer liners. There are 2 main types of liners used which are kraft and test liners. Kraft is stronger than test due to its virgin fibres so it is used for the outer liner while test liners are made from recycled materials hence it is not as strong and is used for the inner liner. The weight is measured in Grams per Meter Square(GMS). For packaging heavier items, more rigidity and strength are needed. Hence more walls of cardboard will be needed. They are called double-wall or tri-wall. The flute type, corrugated section, can affect the performance by changing height and size of the flutes. There are a few different types of flutes such as E,C,B,BC and EB flutes which have different thickness to support different products. It is possible to achieve similar performance with different board grades.
Practical session👻
Some precautions we took❗:
1. Wear cut resistant gloves when using a pen knife.
2. Always wear nitrile gloves throughout the practical.
3. Careful with the hot glue
What are we supposed to do?❓👀
First part: We were supposed to use cardboard to make a vision board. We found out about the different types of joinery used in cardboards to make different types of ways to make it stand. we were also supposed to choose a preferred joinery and reason on why we chose that and present it in front of our class. Our vision board had to include 8 different types of cardboard joineries.
Materials we used for this activity in school📏🗡:
- penknife x2
- scissors x1
- corrugated cardboard x6
- hot glue x2
- rubber bands x10
- cutting board x4
- set of colored markers x1
- rulers x4
- super glue x1
- nitrile gloves x4
- cut resistant gloves x4
RESULTS🙈
We too some pictures📸 during this activity so enjoy😬😬
Slots: It is to cut a small rectangle near one side of the cut out square piece. Hence using the cut square piece, slot it into another cut out piece of any shape. This is seen in our board in figure 2.
Tabs: At the end of the cut out piece , just cut a little line from the bottom using a scissors, so that when bent out it will b squares. Hence easier to paste on board. This is seen in our board in figure 2.
Score and Bends: Cut out a rectangle piece out. Using a penknife follow the line on the cardboard and make sure that it doesn't cut fully. it should be cut so that it can be easier to bend. This is seen in our board in figure 2.
Circle Flange: Cut a rectangle piece outs. follow the lines on the cardboard and bend it accordingly. Then cut slightly with scissors so that it can stand when pasted on the board. Hence make a circle and glue the ends together. This is seen in our board in figure 2.
Gusset: Cut out 3 triangles and 1 rectangle. the 3 triangles will be used to be a stand for the rectangle. Hence paste the 3 triangles on the back side of the rectangle. This is seen in our board in figure 2.
